History |
Mavrovouni is a village about 2 km south of the town of Gytheio, in Laconia, Greece. It is located on a steep hill of dark rock between the hill of Kumaros above Gytheio and the alluvial plain of the Vardhounia river lies a belt of low sandy hills. The district is rich in wines, olives and oranges. The village's economy is based on olive oil production, fishing and tourism.
The hill of Mavrovouni was settled in the early Bronze Age, were Early Helladic ceramics were found here. One sherd with a cable pattern is from a pithos of a micaceous fabric found at Mavrovouni.
The modern village of Mavrovouni settled in 1782, when Tzanetos Grigorakis became bey and built the castle Goulades on the top of the hill. |

Ναυαρχός Τζανέτος Γρηγοράκης ο
μακροβιότερος ηγεμών της Μάνης (1782-1798). Γεννήθηκε στο
Σκουτάρι Λακωνίας το 1742 και απεβίωσε στο Γύθειο το 1813.
Πατέρας του ήταν ο καπετάν Δημητράκης Γρηγοράκης. Ο Τζανέτος
θεωρείται πρώτος οικιστής του νεότερου Γυθείου, καθώς και
της ευρύτερης περιοχής του Μαυροβουνίου, στον οικισμό του
οποίου δέσποζε η καστροκατοικία του.
Τέκνα του ήταν ο Πιέρρος Μαγγιόρος Γρηγοράκης (1770-1836),
αγωνιστής της επανάστασης του 21, και ο Γιωργάκης Γρηγοράκης
, ο οποίος ήταν νυμφευμένος με την Μαρία Βενετσανάκη, κόρη
του θρυλικού Παναγιώταρου. Απέκτησαν ένα γιό τον Τζανετάκη
Γρηγοράκη που γεννήθηκε στο Γύθειο το 1785 και απεβίωσε το
1868. Αγωνιστής του 21 και πρώτος φρούραρχος της Μονεμβάσιας. |

Founding of Marathonisi and Mavrovouni Tzanetos
Grigorakis decided to build forts on the border line, occupying all the surrounding areas, renovating the towers or building new ones, and transferring his hegemony from Skoutari to Gytheio, were he found Marathonisi, and also found a new village on the nearby hill Lykovouni, which it named after the region's old name as Mavrovouni. |

He also built a tower in Mavrovouni and permanently moved there after 1806.
In 1813, Tzanetos Grigorakis died in his castle at

Dimitrios Τsigourakos Grigorakis, leader of Tsigourakos
family and son of Grigorios was one of the leaders of the siege
(fall) of Monemvasia
(23/7/1821) and the siege
(fall) of Tripolitsa (23/09/1821). He was a proxy in the 3rd National Assembly of Epidaurus and a member of parliament. He was decorated with the Silver Cross of the Order of the Saviour, for the 4th National Assembly of the Greeks. He died in 1843 or
1847, aged
52.

αγωνιστής του
1821.
Ήταν γιος του θείου του Πετρόμπεη, μπας καπετάνιου
Τσιγκούριου Γρηγοράκη.
(Τσιγκούριος, δηλαδή αυτός που χρησιμοποιεί καλά το
τσεκούρι), και ήταν ένας από
τους αρχηγούς της πολιορκίας της Μονεμβασίας,
έλαβε μέρος και στην πολιορκία της Τριπολιτσάς.
Διετέλεσε πληρεξούσιος στην
Γ΄ Εθνοσυνέλευση Επιδαύρου και
βουλευτής. Παρασημοφορήθηκε με τον Αργυρο Σταυρο του
Ταγματος του Σωτηρος, για τη Δ Εθνικη των Ελληνων συνελευση,
εν αργει. Πέθανε το 1843, σε ηλικία 52 ετών, ή το 1847.

The beach of Mavrovouni is protected by an international project, as
it is visited every year by the loggerhead sea turtles which
commonly called Caretta-Caretta and at the beach they dig nests to
lay their eggs. A loggerhead sea turtle nest roped off as part of
the Sea Turtle Protection Project of Archelon. It is 5 minutes away
from Gythion town and near to Mavrovouni beach.
Gythion, Mavrovouni is the perfect choice in Peloponnese to
celebrate a special occasion. Villa Tzortzakos is situated 650m from
the 5 kms long sandy beach of Mavrovouni, 5 km away from the
beautiful sea side town of Gythion.The beach is 5km long and it has
the advantage that it is never crowded. In the morning (from 08:00
to 12:00) it is perfect for those who love to swim and later in the
afternoon the wind benefits those who love to windsurf. Watching the
windsurfers is still a very interesting show for those who lie on
the beach. |
